ABC’s of Home Security

Unless you’ve left someone like Macaulay Calkin in your home, you wouldn’t want your house standing alone on Christmas Eve or on any other occasion. Burglars attack whether you are on a vacation or sleeping peacefully at night. These opportunists not only steal your valuables and hard-earned cash, they also destroy the sanctity of your home and your peace of mind. So, be prepared and secure your home.

The following are some tips that will provide you information on how to protect your greatest investment from becoming a burglar’s next prey.

Assess your Home

Think like a burglar. Look for vulnerable areas of your house that can be a possible entry point of thieves like glass doors, low windows, terraces, etc. Check the locks of the external doors and windows. Inspect the house at night and look for possible areas where burglars can hide before breaking an entry to your home.

Plan What You Need to Do

After assessing your home for its security needs, you probably have a better and clearer picture of what you need to do to protect your home. You may want to put more locks on your windows and doors or add lighting to your backyard. But whatever that is, the bottom line is you now have an idea on what home security measures and gadgets you need to include and install in your home.

Included in a basic security systems are exterior door and window sensors and an alarm control panel with touch pad. This might be enough to appease you from thoughts of possible break-ins. Once the window or door has been broken or opened, the alarm will sound to alert you and, depending on the loudness of the alarm, possibly your neighbor too. More sophisticated home security systems may include automatic flashing exterior lights upon triggering the alarm.

Depending on your needs, other security gadgets can be added to your security system. One is a “glass break” sensor, a gadget that responds when a picture window is broken. Another is a motion detector with activated flashing lights. The light will flash and the alarm will sound when movement is detected in selected areas. Finally, there is video surveillance. This can be installed inside and outside the home. With the help of the internet and other networking devices, it is now possible to check the video images generated by the cameras at your home from your laptops or PDA.

Implement Your System

After you have installed your security system, be sure that you know how to operate the devices. Teach your family members too about the correct activation and deactivation of the alarms. Always keep the devices clean and working. This will ensure that your system is always working and you are always protected.
